The lesser-known side of vitamin D ...

Most of us have heard of vitamin D, as it is also called the sunshine vitamin, which our body produces in our skin when exposed to sunlight and UV light. It is produced from cholesterol in the skin.

What most people don’t know, however, is the fact that vitamin D is not a vitamin at all, but a hormone. And not just any kind, but one that affects more than 1,000 genes in the body. It is also important for calcium metabolism and maintaining bone and muscle health.

Has there really been a global pandemic?
We live in a part of the world where, unfortunately, the most sunlight is received for only about 3 months per year. This is far too little for sufficient vitamin D production.

We might as well call it a global pandemic of vitamin D deficiency. According to the Understanding Vitamin D Deficiency study, as many as one billion of the world's population suffers from deficiency, which is a truly astounding number. Factors to which we can attribute the deficiency are wearing clothes, dark skin with a lot of melanin which synthesizes less vitamin D, excessive weight, use of sunscreens that prevent the synthesis of vitamin, environmental and air pollution, improper diet…

The epidemic in Europe…
Studies conducted in Europe also show that deficiency is very common among the population. As many as 60 % of the tested adolescent population suffers from vitamin D deficit and the data on this can be found in the study Key Nutrients in Bone Health.

As is self-evident from the title of this study, vitamin D is extremely important for the health of our bones. People who get too little of vitamin D may develop conditions known as rickets in children and osteoporosis in adults.

Sunbathing is considered dangerous
Vitamin D is not only important for our bones, but it also plays an extraordinary role when it comes to our mental health. Everyone has already encountered some form of anxiety, depression, or melancholy in the darker months of the year… Sometimes this seems to last and drag on even into the late summer. Sometime in September, when, according to various studies, the levels of vitamin D in the blood of the average European reach the highest point (yet often still not high enough), there is finally an improvement, only for the darker months to come again so the cycle repeats.

Even in summer, not enough vitamin D is produced in the skin of the average person. To get enough, we should sunbathe half-naked with no sunscreen during the hottest time of the day, when, contradictory, it is the most dangerous. In the long run, this is a dangerous thing to do and is highly discouraged by all doctors.

How can I know that I am deficient in vitamin D?
In some cases, the deficiency manifests itself in the form of pain in the bones, lower back, and muscles. However, frequent exhaustion, fatigue and persistently low energy levels can also indicate a deficiency.

Another important indicator is a weak immune system, as the role of vitamin D is indispensable here. Vitamin D is involved in the formation of cells that kill viruses and bacteria. Without it, they can’t function properly. Deficiency can also be associated with various infections, inflammations, and even a predisposition to pneumonia and asthma.

High blood pressure, poor wound and injury healing, autoimmune diseases, depression and even obesity also fall into the category of possible symptoms of deficiency. In severe cases, the deficiency should also be associated with migraines, multiple sclerosis, dementia…

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) also confirms the importance of this sunshine vitamin. According to official and certified documents, vitamin D contributes to:

  • the normal absorption / utilization of calcium and phosphorus.
  • normal blood calcium levels.
  • maintaining healthy bones.
  • muscle function.
  • maintaining healthy teeth.
  • the functioning of the immune system.
  • proper cell division.

Which form of vitamin D is actually better?
There are two forms of vitamin D. These are D2 or ergocalciferol or D3, i.e. cholecalciferol.

D2 is most commonly found in plant sources, but it is not nearly as effective as D3 found in fish, eggs, liver, butter, and some types of lichens. Even the skin itself, in contact with ultraviolet rays, forms a more effective version of this vitamin, i.e. vitamin D3.

Confirmed also by the doctors …
However, since the already mentioned studies show such a high number of people suffering from deficiency, this confirms that we do not consume enough of these foods or that they are so nutrient-depleted due to modern intensive agricultural production that they cannot provide us with this important vitamin.

Unfortunately, high sun exposure has more harmful effects than positive ones in the long run, so this method of obtaining vitamin D3 is not recommended. Skin cancer, which is the result of sun exposure without using sunblock, has become all too common, as the strong sun quickly causes photo-ageing and precancerous cells, which has long been confirmed by doctors.

It is therefore a very common recommendation in the medical profession to supplement your diet with vitamin D, which is a better and safer solution than sun exposure.

Before you decide on one of the dietary supplements, it is good to know this…
The most common form of vitamin D3 on the market is that obtained from lanolin. In fact, it is vitamin D which is obtained from the fat found on sheep's wool.

If the thought of this sends a shiver down your spine, fish oil supplements are also available. However, these are often not environmentally friendly or are contaminated with heavy metals. We can also find industrially made synthetic versions, which often contain substances that are unfortunately not the most health-friendly, as they may cause allergies, diarrhoea and indigestion.

But there is another highly effective solution…
Researchers were looking for the possibility of obtaining vitamin D3 that would be natural, holistic, environmentally friendly and effective. They finally found it- high concentrations of vitamin D3 were found in lichen.

It is Cladonia rangiferina or reindeer lichen, which contains enough vitamin D3 to perfectly meet the body's needs for it, as proved by Swedish researchers from the University of Lund, who also published a study Vitamin D in an ecological context.

At Malinca, we naturally followed to best choice there is - D3 from reindeer lichen.
Because we firmly believe in the importance of what we put in our bodies, we have thoroughly studied all these possibilities and consulted with the experts.

After all the conversations and taking into account the wishes of customers who want something highly effective and of high quality, and are also aware of the dangers of sunbathing, we decided to offer a dietary supplement in the form of capsules containing reindeer lichen.

The natural form allows for excellent absorption, as the natural vitamins are bound to the phytonutrients that the body absorbs and uses as it would from food, which is very good news.

Vitamin D3 capsules from Malinca are:

  • 100 % natural product
  • Vegan
  • Gluten-free
  • Lactose-free
  • Free of sugars, fillers and other additives

Who is vitamin D3 in capsules especially suitable for?
In fact, for everyone, as the need for this nutrient is unfortunately not met by the vast majority. We especially recommend the vitamin D3 supplement for people who work indoors, adolescents who need vitamin D for healthy development, and the elderly, who can no longer synthesize vitamin D well enough due to their thickened skin.

We also recommend it to those with darker skin, because the high content of melanin also prevents the synthesis of vitamin D, and to very fair-skinned people, who for health reasons rigorously avoid the sun and to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, as the baby needs it for healthy development.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this Vitamin D3 different from others?
It is a natural form of vitamin D3 that is otherwise rare in plant-based sources. In the case of lichens, this is a very special organism, a kind of combination of fungi and algae that live in symbiosis and form lichen. It is highly resistant to the conditions prevailing in the environment where it grows. It contains important nutrients, including important and highly concentrated vitamin D3.

How and when should I take vitamin D3 capsules?
One capsule a day with some water before any meal is recommended, preferably before breakfast or lunch, as according to some studies, taking it in the evening is said to affect the quality of sleep in some individuals.

Who are vitamin D3 capsules suitable for?
In fact, for all people, as the need for this nutrient is unfortunately not sufficiently met by most. We especially recommend the vitamin D3 supplement to people who work indoors, adolescents who need vitamin D for development, the elderly who can no longer synthesize vitamin D well enough due to their thickened skin. We also recommend it to those with darker skin, as the high level of melanin also prevents the synthesis of vitamin D, as well as to very fair-skinned people, who for health reasons avoid the sun, and also pregnant women and breastfeeding moms, as the child doesn’t get enough of this nutrient from breast milk, yet it urgently needs this vitamin for healthy development.

Can I take it in combination with other dietary supplements?
Vitamin D3 in capsules can also be taken in combination with other dietary supplements such as Immunobiotics, Magnesium, Collagen UP, Omega 3, Vitamins, etc. If you are taking specific medications for any illness, consult your doctor before taking supplements.

Can you overdose? What happens if you take too much vitamin D3?
The recommended daily amount of vitamin D3 for adults is 5 µg, for pregnant women, children and others who need bigger doses, 20 µg, and one Malinca capsule contains 25 µg, which is slightly above average, but has no negative consequences, as the upper intake level per day is up to 100 µg. Various studies, however, suggest that it should be consumed in much greater dosages. Symptoms of too much vitamin D3 in the blood are elevated levels of calcium in the blood, as vitamin D causes better calcium absorption, which may trigger nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, indigestion. If we take the prescribed amount, i.e. one capsule a day, this cannot happen, even if we take the capsules continuously. Namely, the body will use the added vitamin on an ongoing basis, as it is in most cases not sufficiently obtained through the sun and food.

Does the product contain gluten and lactose?
The product is completely vegan, free of gluten, lactose and sugars.

Is it suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers?
Vitamin D3 capsules are even highly recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers due to the increased need for this vitamin.

How long can I take Vitamin D3 capsules?
Since we usually do not consume enough vitamin D3 with food and the sun does not provide us with sufficient synthesis during the year, the deficiency is common and we recommend taking it regularly. However, the recommended daily intake should not be exceeded.

From what age on can we enjoy it?
Vitamin D3 capsules can be taken by adolescents from 14 years of age on.

Can I open the capsule if I can't eat it?
The capsule can be easily opened or bitten. The effect will be the same. However, it is more practical to take the whole capsule.
