Most of us have heard of vitamin D, as it is also called the sunshine vitamin, which our body produces in our skin when exposed to sunlight and UV light. It is produced from cholesterol in the skin.

What most people don’t know, however, is the fact that vitamin D is not a vitamin at all, but a hormone. And not just any kind, but one that affects more than 1,000 genes in the body. It is also important for calcium metabolism and maintaining bone and muscle health.

Has there really been a global pandemic?
We live in a part of the world where, unfortunately, the most sunlight is received for only about 3 months per year. This is far too little for sufficient vitamin D production.

We might as well call it a global pandemic of vitamin D deficiency. According to the Understanding Vitamin D Deficiency study, as many as one billion of the world's population suffers from deficiency, which is a truly astounding number. Factors to which we can attribute the deficiency are wearing clothes, dark skin with a lot of melanin which synthesizes less vitamin D, excessive weight, use of sunscreens that prevent the synthesis of vitamin, environmental and air pollution, improper diet…

The epidemic in Europe…
Studies conducted in Europe also show that deficiency is very common among the population. As many as 60 % of the tested adolescent population suffers from vitamin D deficit and the data on this can be found in the study Key Nutrients in Bone Health.

As is self-evident from the title of this study, vitamin D is extremely important for the health of our bones. People who get too little of vitamin D may develop conditions known as rickets in children and osteoporosis in adults.

Sunbathing is considered dangerous
Vitamin D is not only important for our bones, but it also plays an extraordinary role when it comes to our mental health. Everyone has already encountered some form of anxiety, depression, or melancholy in the darker months of the year… Sometimes this seems to last and drag on even into the late summer. Sometime in September, when, according to various studies, the levels of vitamin D in the blood of the average European reach the highest point (yet often still not high enough), there is finally an improvement, only for the darker months to come again so the cycle repeats.

Even in summer, not enough vitamin D is produced in the skin of the average person. To get enough, we should sunbathe half-naked with no sunscreen during the hottest time of the day, when, contradictory, it is the most dangerous. In the long run, this is a dangerous thing to do and is highly discouraged by all doctors.

How can I know that I am deficient in vitamin D?
In some cases, the deficiency manifests itself in the form of pain in the bones, lower back, and muscles. However, frequent exhaustion, fatigue and persistently low energy levels can also indicate a deficiency.

Another important indicator is a weak immune system, as the role of vitamin D is indispensable here. Vitamin D is involved in the formation of cells that kill viruses and bacteria. Without it, they can’t function properly. Deficiency can also be associated with various infections, inflammations, and even a predisposition to pneumonia and asthma.

High blood pressure, poor wound and injury healing, autoimmune diseases, depression and even obesity also fall into the category of possible symptoms of deficiency. In severe cases, the deficiency should also be associated with migraines, multiple sclerosis, dementia…

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) also confirms the importance of this sunshine vitamin. According to official and certified documents, vitamin D contributes to:

  • maintaining healthy teeth.

Which form of vitamin D is actually better?
There are two forms of vitamin D. These are D2 or ergocalciferol or D3, i.e. cholecalciferol.

D2 is most commonly found in plant sources, but it is not nearly as effective as D3 found in fish, eggs, liver, butter, and some types of lichens. Even the skin itself, in contact with ultraviolet rays, forms a more effective version of this vitamin, i.e. vitamin D3.

However, since the already mentioned studies show such a high number of people suffering from deficiency, this confirms that we do not consume enough of these foods or that they are so nutrient-depleted due to modern intensive agricultural production that they cannot provide us with this important vitamin.

Unfortunately, high sun exposure has more harmful effects than positive ones in the long run, so this method of obtaining vitamin D3 is not recommended. Skin cancer, which is the result of sun exposure without using sunblock, has become all too common, as the strong sun quickly causes photo-ageing and precancerous cells, which has long been confirmed by doctors.

It is therefore a very common recommendation in the medical profession to supplement your diet with vitamin D, which is a better and safer solution than sun exposure.

The most common form of vitamin D3 on the market is that obtained from lanolin. In fact, it is vitamin D which is obtained from the fat found on sheep's wool.

Can you overdose? What happens if you take too much vitamin D3?
The recommended daily amount of vitamin D3 for adults is 5 µg, for pregnant women, children and others who need bigger doses, 20 µg, and one Malinca capsule contains 25 µg, which is slightly above average, but has no negative consequences, as the upper intake level per day is up to 100 µg. Various studies, however, suggest that it should be consumed in much greater dosages. Symptoms of too much vitamin D3 in the blood are elevated levels of calcium in the blood, as vitamin D causes better calcium absorption, which may trigger nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, indigestion. If we take the prescribed amount, i.e. one capsule a day, this cannot happen, even if we take the capsules continuously. Namely, the body will use the added vitamin on an ongoing basis, as it is in most cases not sufficiently obtained through the sun and food.

Does the product contain gluten and lactose?
