Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a hardy plant. The Latin name marianum is associated with milky white veins in the spikes surrounding the purple-scarlet flowers.
The seeds are harvested in the fall (September and October), dried and used for extracts and tinctures or ground into a powder. The plant is also known as Mary thistle or Scotch thistle. It can grow up to two meters in height. Ground seeds have a faint cocoa scent.
Natural support
Because silymarin in milk thistle is poorly soluble in water, it is recommended to consume it with fats. Milk thistle should be avoided by nursing mothers and pregnant women. Milk thistle can have a laxative effect.
