WHAT IS MALASSEZIA, WHAT DOES IT FEED ON, AND WHY CAN IT CAUSE US PROBLEMS?
Malassezia is a genus of yeast (fungus) that naturally lives on the surface of the skin, including the scalp. It is present in most people and is part of the normal skin microbiota. Malassezia plays an important role in maintaining skin balance, but under certain conditions, it can overgrow, leading to scalp and skin problems.
What does Malassezia feed on?
Malassezia feeds on lipids (fats) found in sebum – the natural oil secreted by sebaceous glands on the scalp. Its diet is primarily based on long-chain fatty acids, such as oleic acid, which is produced when triglycerides in sebum are broken down. When Malassezia breaks down these fatty acids, it can produce substances that irritate the skin.
Why don't we want Malassezia to overgrow?
Excessive growth of Malassezia can cause various scalp problems, including:
• Dandruff: One of the most common issues caused by excessive growth of Malassezia is dandruff. When Malassezia overgrows, it produces irritating fatty acids that cause skin flaking and itching.
• Seborrheic dermatitis: This is an inflammatory skin condition also associated with excessive growth of Malassezia. It causes red, itchy, and flaky patches on the scalp and elsewhere on the body where sebaceous glands are active (e.g., eyebrows, nasal fold).
• Itchy and irritated scalp: When Malassezia metabolizes sebum, it releases substances that can irritate the scalp, causing itching and inflammation. Prolonged irritation can also lead to weakening of hair follicles and hair loss.

This advice is not entirely unfounded, as beer contains hops, which have truly positive effects on it. 1. Gently and carefully shake the bottle to ensure an even distribution of ingredients before application.
2. Before washing your hair, apply directly to dry scalp 2–3 droppers of serum. The dropper consists of the upper rubber part and a glass pipette for drawing the serum. 1 dropper means that the pipette draws approximately 1 centimeter of serum from the bottle, which is about 15 drops. The volume of one pipette filling is approximately 0.7 ml. The serum is drawn into the pipette by gently squeezing the upper rubber part, and when dripping the serum over the scalp, do not squeeze the rubber part, as the serum drips from the dropper by itself.
3. Gently massage the serum into the scalp with your fingertips or a massage brush. Massage the scalp in circular motions for at least 3–5 minutes, focusing on problem areas.
4. Leave the serum on for at least 30 minutes, then thoroughly rinse it out with your favorite shampoo. Continue with your usual care (conditioner, mask).
5. For optimal results, use 1–2 times a week or as needed.

The serum is suitable for use from the age of 15, including adolescents with dandruff or oily scalp issues.
Who should not use the scalp serum?
