Goji berries, also known as wolfberries, grow on bushes up to three meters in height. They can be grown elsewhere, but they thrive best on the high slopes of Tibet mountains. Growing at high altitudes, subject to many weather conditions and frequent droughts, they take the best nutrients from the soil and are thus very hardy and resistant.
The Chinese have celebrated their hardiness for millennia. At first, they were consumed as fresh fruit harvested from the branches, later on, they were made into tea and added to soups and other dishes. They were valued to such an extent that they were used to treat kings and given to warriors before battle.
Goji berries, nowadays recognized as a superfood, are red in color and resemble rosehip in size and shape. They have a slightly sweet taste, complemented by a bitter aftertaste. In terms of flavor, they most closely resemble cranberries. They contain a number of small seeds that add a nice texture if ground or used in baked goods.
