Ashwaganda (Latin: Withania somnifera) is also known as winter cherry or Indian ginseng and is one of the most important medicinal herbs in Ayurveda.

Ashwaganda is a short shrub with small yellow bell-shaped flowers. It blooms from July to September. The fruit is orange-red. The useful part is Ashwaganda’s brown root, which is used ground. It has been used for several centuries and in grown in the Middle East, in some parts of Africa and in China. In order to thrive well, it requires a climate that is warm and not too humid. The plant’s Latin name is Withania somniferia, which is a testament to some of its effects.

Ashwaganda is thought to have numerous other benefits:

  • It is prized in Ayurveda.
  • Withanina means scientistor science and somniferia means promoting sleep.
  • It has been in use for at least 3000 years. Indian historic records refer to ashwaganda as a miracle plant.
  • It has been known in Europe since the 16th century.
  • It can grow up to one and a half meters in height.
  • Ashwaganda roots are fairly straight and up to 30 centimeters long.
  • In traditional medicine, older plants are preferred, but both the roots and the parts of the plant above ground are useful.
  • Cultivating ashwaganda is not difficult. It is also an ornamental plant.
  • Due to some similarities with ginseng, ashwaganda is sometimes referred to as Indian ginseng.
  • It is mentioned in the old Assyrian records as a tranquilizer.

Using organic ashwaganda powder

Mix 3g (1 teaspoon) a day in freshly squeezed juice, smoothie or water. Have 1 teaspoon in a warm drink in the evening before bed. Not recommended for pregnant women and in case of thyroid issues.
